One major way a current or former NCAA student-athlet can prepare for life after sports is by getting an internship.
An internship is the position of a student or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without pay, to gain work experience. Internships are paid and count toward course credit for college.
The NCAA is offering a postgraduate internship that provides on-the-job learning experiences at the national office in Indianapolis. Essentially, it’ll benefit any student-athlete who is passionate in their pursuit of a career in college sports administration. This yearlong program gives insight to the inner workings of college sports from the national perspective.
Interns plan and execute professional development site visits to conference offices and affiliate organizations. Basically, this helps them to further their knowledge of the collegiate sports industry and network with today’s leaders.
What internships are available?
The NCAA offers yearlong internships within several focus areas at the national office. These include administrative services, accounting, championships, marketing, communications, education and community engagement, executive, inclusion, governance, public relations and regulatory affairs.
Who is eligible for the NCAA internship?
Selection has a focus on ethnic minorities, women and former student-athletes.
Applicants must be a college graduate from a four-year NCAA member school by the start date of the internship program. An intern may be eligible to earn credit toward a graduate degree. However, the NCAA Internship Program is not designed to provide credit toward an undergraduate degree.
The 2023-24 NCAA Postgraduate Internship Program will take place in person in Indianapolis, with relocation required for all cohort members. All interns will be subject to the same in-person/virtual work policy as all full-time staff members.
